Growing Opium
In a country where opium grows like the corn of Nebraska it is hard to miss it. This morning when I was watering the trees in our yard and pulling weeds when I came across my first opium plant. It was growing very nicely in our yard. It made me wonder just how it got there. Most of the walls there are made of mud and stubble and it very easily could have been in that and poppies do grow wild here and it could have come from that, or many people grow their own for personal use and it could have come from some neighbor. It is very hard for this country that has been devastated by war to rebuild. One of the major problems is the large amount of opium that is produced. Maybe even a bigger problem is that what do these people do if the government comes in and wipes out there harvest. It is very hard to make a living here and opium brings in four or five times the amount that any other crop would. Opium grows very easily in the soil and it really thrives. It is very important to remember these people that they would find other ways to make a living other then in an illegal manner.
